In plain English, it is the steel shaft that transfers power from your transmission out to your drive wheels. It is the final connection in the drivetrain chain. Older cars used a solid rear axle that just went straight across, but modern vehicles have independent suspension. That means each wheel needs to move up and down over bumps and turn side to side for steering, all while getting a steady stream of power. The CV axle handles all of that without missing a beat.
So what is actually inside one of these things? A CV axle is not just a simple metal rod. On each end, you have what is called a CV joint. The inner joint hooks up to the transmission, and the outer joint connects to the wheel hub. Both joints are packed with heavy-duty grease and wrapped in a ribbed rubber boot. That boot is the weak link in the whole setup. Its only job is to keep the grease in and the dirt and water out. The outer joint is the one that takes the most abuse because it has to handle the steering angle every time you turn the wheel.
How can you tell when one of these is going south?
The signs are pretty obvious if you know what to listen for. The big one is a clicking or popping sound when you crank the wheel hard in either direction. That is the outer joint telling you it is worn out. If you are getting a vibration or a low growl when you accelerate in a straight line, that usually points to the inner joint having issues. Another giveaway is grease flung all over the inside of your wheel rim or dripping down onto your driveway. That means the rubber boot has split open, the grease is escaping, and dirt is getting in to chew up the joint from the inside.
Putting off this repair is a dangerous game. If you keep driving on a failing CV axle, that joint is going to let go completely at the worst possible moment. When it breaks, you lose power to that wheel instantly. If you are on a busy highway or making a turn through an intersection, that can put you in a bad situation fast. On top of that, when the axle snaps, it can thrash around and take out your transmission housing or other nearby components. What could have been a straightforward replacement turns into a major repair bill that will make your stomach turn.
