Women in Automotive: Shaping the Industry and Leading the Charge

The automotive industry has long been a field dominated by men, but women have played crucial roles in shaping and improving it. From groundbreaking engineering feats to transformative leadership, women have left an indelible mark on the world of automobiles. At Hillside Auto Repair, we recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of women in the automotive sector, and we are committed to continuing this legacy through our own practices and initiatives.

The Pioneering Spirit of Women in Automotive

Historically, women have been pivotal in advancing automotive technology and innovation. One of the earliest female automotive pioneers was Bertha Benz, who in 1888 took the first long-distance automobile trip to demonstrate the reliability of her husband Karl Benz’s invention. This bold move not only proved the practicality of the automobile but also showcased the significant role women can play in the industry.

Windshield wipers have an interesting backstory that goes all the way back to 1903. That’s when Mary Anderson, a super determined inventor, changed the game for drivers. She came up with a cool design that was basically a hand-operated lever to swipe a blade across the windshield, making it easier to see by clearing off rain and junk.

As time progressed, women continued to break barriers. In the 1940s, women like Louise McPhetridge and Alice H. Parker made notable contributions to automotive engineering and design. More recently, figures such as Mary Barra, the Chairman and CEO of General Motors, have become influential leaders, steering major automotive corporations toward innovation and sustainability.

Women’s Impact on Modern Automotive Advancements

Women have also been at the forefront of modern automotive advancements. Their contributions span various facets of the industry, including engineering, design, and leadership. For instance, women engineers have been instrumental in developing advanced safety features, electric vehicles, and autonomous driving technologies. Their perspectives and insights have led to more inclusive and user-centered vehicle designs, addressing the needs of a diverse customer base.

Moreover, female leaders are driving the automotive industry’s shift towards more sustainable practices. Mary Barra's leadership at General Motors has emphasized electric vehicles and renewable energy solutions, pushing the industry toward greener and more environmentally-friendly practices.

Empowering Women Through Automotive Knowledge

Our commitment to empowering women extends beyond our workforce. Our very own Director of Operations at Hillside, NaTasha Brand, is the founder and one of the instructors of The Women's Automotive Empowerment Course that is available upon request at Hillside Auto Repair. NaTasha had an inspiring chat with another woman in the automotive world, which sparked her creativity to develop a course aimed at helping fellow women feel confident and knowledgeable about car maintenance and repairs. The course is offered at no cost; however, it is supported by donations from various vendors within the automotive industry. These contributions allow us to provide participants with complimentary swag bags containing automotive gear, tools, and delightful treats. Hillside Auto Repair provides the venue for the The Women's Automotive Empowerment Course, the class is kept small (maximum of 10 attendees) The course is designed to provide women with practical knowledge and confidence in automotive maintenance and repair. These courses cover essential skills such as changing tires, jumping batteries, checking fluids, and understanding basic car mechanics.

We believe that car knowledge should be accessible and non-intimidating. Our approach focuses on education and support, ensuring that participants leave feeling empowered and capable. We deliberately avoid fear-based selling tactics or condescending attitudes. Instead, we aim to foster a welcoming environment where women feel comfortable learning and asking questions.
